Shieldbangers

We’ve just unveiled a new class — the Shieldbangers!

The Shieldbanger is the varl equivalent of a living tank. He boasts high armor and strength and his abilities allow him to not only soak up damage, but also push enemies out of the way on the battlefield.

Shieldbanger — varl tank with shield:

Strongarm — knocks enemies back with his shield
Provoker — Taunts an enemy, causing them to miss a turn
Shieldmaster — returns damage to anyone who attacks him

Meet Griss

Griss, a strongarm is a warrior through and through, having fought in every great war and killed countless dredge and men alike. Dependable, when he’s not shooting his mouth off. He’s your typical varl ready to do whatever is necessary.

Meet Iver

Iver is a varl who has a friendship with Rook and helps out in the land of men quite often.

When Skogr was still young, Iver wandered into the town’s center, startling the settlers from Rundwall who had rarely seen a varl before. He’s never said why he left varl lands to help men build a small town, but each chieftain in Skogr’s family line is happy to have him. He’s known Rook since the man was young, and the two formed a fast kinship.

Raiders

Raiders represent the fierce up close and personnel type of fighter, the sort of man who fights for a living. He is your quintessential viking.

Taking cues from historical combat, Raiders can huddle together to form shield walls, improving their own defenses as well as those of their allies. Put multiple raiders together in the same formation and this defensive bonus becomes even more significant.

Each specialty fills a diverse variety of roles. While all Raiders are highly mobile, the Backbiter takes this to the next level by getting behind enemy lines to wreak havoc while the Thrasher can deliver a flurry of blows to an opponent even when close to death. Meanwhile, the Raidmaster has perfected the shieldwall, becoming a one-man forward charge who can deflect blows that would outright kill a normal fighter.

However you choose to build your raiders they’ll prove to be valuable team players in battle.

Varl

Within The Banner Saga players will encounter a myriad of characters as well as some unique races such as the varl. Long ago the gods created these horned giants by weaving together humans with powerful and sturdy creatures called yox. Varl are large in stature and while given due respect as brutish warriors on the battlefield are also known as highly intelligent tacticians and savvy traders.

In The Banner Saga, varl can currently either be of the Shieldbanger tree or the Warrior tree meaning they prefer to be up close and personal while in combat. You’ll also notice throughout the story that most of the varl tend to care little of the humans they share the world with, but hold in high esteem those who prove their worth.

One bit of advice — don’t get on a varl’s bad side.

The Travel Trailer

The travel strategy in The Banner Saga is a unique game-play element not seen in many other games.

Highlights of the trailer include a focus on how managing morale, supplies and population can greatly affect the player’s personal experience, as well as how they can directly impact each other.  It also touches on how to best use “Camp,” which is where a player can rest their caravan, organize their party and where a lot of decision making with regards to upgrading characters is made. We are leaving lots of options up to the players and it’s up to them to manage their party.
