Twas a great stream! Didn't manage to actively participate, but enjoyed the recording: https://go.twitch.tv/videos/183681689

Here's three statements (or.. commandments! ) wrapping up their Masterclass on Worldbuilding and Consequential Storytelling

Statement One: Build your gameplay systems and world building in service of a story. Your game systems should influence your world building, and your world building should be crucial to the story.

Statement Two: Take into account player-driven goals, but try to bring the player's decisions down to the level of character motivation. The player should care more about what the character wants than making the right decision

Statement Three: Consequential decision making is about identifying what variables you can affect in your game, and then applying them to every choice the player makes. It doesn't matter that they're always huge decisions, as long as the game is reacting to, and acknowledges what the player did.

Here's some more interesting TBS facts I picked from the Stream:

    1. The tone-setting motif "...the sun has stopped in the sky..." was actually a result of an artistic decision: Arnie was so fond of the oblique sun-rays in the Eyvind Earle landscapes, that he absolutely had to have a way to trap that lighting angle & shadows in all the game scenes

    2. Valka inspiration are the Valkyries and the Norns.

    3. The game is inspired by vikings (before vikings were cool...) but Stoic wanted to be somewhat historically correct, i.e. they didn't want any of those "over the top" figures we see in contemporary renditions of viking life & mythos. But, then again, this was a fantasy world... So, they went for a dichotomy: regular vikings like Rook etc are, well, regular humans, with jobs and family, forced to fight for survival. But, there's these other vikings, huge and strong and with horns (not horned helms!), drinking mead and fighting all the time... Behold the Varl race

    4. We sneak-peeked an Arberrang captain-of-guard (?) character with the looks of Zeb West, Stoic's producer.

    5. Vognir's unexpected permadeath so early in the game was fully intended, as a hard lesson: that nobody (even legendary varl warriors) is safe in this world/story, and there's nothing you can do to protect/save them.

    6. Maybe we've heard this before, but here goes: A big chunk of initial Saga1 content was cut for the sake of the pacing of the game. It was about the journey of Hakon's caravan from Ridgehorn to Grofheim to Einartoft, after Ch3 and in-parallel timelines with Ch4 (Rook's POV). I suppose it was all about Dredge slaying, so, yeah; Chapter 3 is already packed with vs. Dredge Wars
