View Full Version : Viking Grand Strategy: Pagan expansion in development for Crusader Kings 2

We've had threads on a documentary about vikings and a TV show about vikings so I figure that a grand strategy game about vikings will be well received here. Crusader Kings 2, as some of you may know, is a dynasty-building game set in Europe that goes from 1066 to 1435. Sadly, the base game starts off with the majority of Europe converted to Christianity. But Old Gods (video) (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/04/04/thorful-crusader-kings-ii-the-old-gods-dev-diaries/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+RockPaperShotgun+%28Rock%2C+P aper%2C+Shotgun%29) rolls back the clock to the 9th century, enabling all sorts of lovely pagan options and allowing vikings to travel along rivers and raid to their heart's content.

If you don't have this game yet, it's sold for a massive discount at every Steam sale, and is easily worth your money in terms of replayability value. Unfortunately, fans of strategy or tactics games will be disappointed - while you have some control over the composition of your armies and effectiveness of their arms and armour, as well as the assignment of commanders to army flanks with a very deep traits system, you have absolutely no control during the actual battle beyond "send your guys to where the enemy guys are". The game is not about the battles themselves - often, there will be a weak enemy you would love to crush, but you have no claim on their land. Fortunately, pagans can declare war on anyone, and indeed must, or else their people will dislike them!

The last expansion pack (play as merchant republics? lame) was a bit of a dud in my opinion, but this one is bound to be awesome.
