Draft mode! ヘ(^_^ヘ)
Each player is given 6 random units: one is level 3, two level 2 and rest level 1. They choose one unit and pass the others to the player that signed up after them (last guy/girl passes them to the first one). They choose second time, pass the remaining four down and so it goes until everybody has a team of six units. They are then allowed to mix in any amount of level 0's.

The main advantage of this method is that players get their reward right away - they get to keep the chosen cards (levels 1-3) and are having fun trying to make those wicked compositions work. The winner gets recognition, but no renown.

Entering the tournament would cost 50-150r making it super attractive, alternative method of acquiring new troops, for both advanced and starting players. The starters would get a chance to battle the titans, the titans would get yet another chance to see who is currently the best.

The main disadvantages are timing (all participants need to be present or the picking part will take too long) and luck factor (new player might aim to get as many high cost units as he can, sending high value units to the lucky guy after him, people might get Varl starved, etc.).

What do You guys think? If not as a Factions feature, maybe a group phase system for the next Vig rid tournament? (=`〜=)

I second this! Random team generator but you choose the levels to add to twelve, but not the line up or order.

So, it's basically a random team generator, but you also have some options of trading/exchanging, along with some luck thrown in! As you pointed out, it looks a lot like some card games I'm familiar with here in Greece (don't know the English names though :().

Another tricky point (apart from having everybody present for the draw) is getting all players with teams of the equal-power. How do we do this? Or, is it left up to them to decide over keeping a low-rank unit they like over a higher-rank one they don't?

It's based on the most popular (among newbies, pros prefer bringing their own decks) Magic: the Gathering, Friday Night Magic tournament format - it's fast, fun, challenging and everybody gets a reward.

As for the levels - we randomize one level 3 unit, two level 2 and three level 1 and put them into pack. Each player gets such a pack, so the average team level will be 10.

Most will keep their level 3 on the first rotation, but some might prefer guaranteed level 2 WH over level 3 Thrasher, so the guy after him will get it and be possibly one level above others.

There will be some problems with team balance after all the drawing is done, hence the option to fill all the blank spots/unwanted units with level 0 units of the players choice. This will possibly lower the power of the team (even down to zero) but the player will have more control over the team composition.

We could do it for next Vigrid, should there be enough players for a group phase. Group them by time zone and have them do the draft.

So, since swapping characters/units is not actually possible in TBSF, we would have to:

(a) Everybody having every unit/rank -- impossible
(b) define a limited set of units commonly available to everybody -- could be
(c) Every player is a-priori restricted to choose his random units considering what he's actually got -- easiest to do, but less interesting (and less random)

Perhaps something between (b) & (c) would work fine. If that suggestion about "having all units/ranks available for friendly-matches" finally hits home, then it's no problem.
