As you may know, a hacker severely vandalized our website on Monday, Sept 9. The crude hack gained entrance through outdated VBulletin plugin code, and was able to wipe out the content and skinning of the webpage. The hack was unable to access user data, and unable to access the forum thread database.

We put together a new front page, and brought VBulletin back up (Thanks, Sean!), so please feel free to go about your interactions!

PS. If you are curious what the hackers left behind, you can see it here: http://stoicstudio.com/hax.html

:D Phew! I had some fears that they could have done much greater damage, but it seems you "just" needed to re-build/load all the site structure, while data was safe. Thank god(s) -- But those are all dead :p

I got a snapshot of the event, too. It was night-time here in Greece when this took place, but I'd left the chat window open in my browser at work, so it held the last instance of the site before it went down (at around 02h25 GMT).

PPS. You will find many Stoic posts with broken image links. They will usually be to a file in a subdirectory of

http://stoicstudio.com/images
http://stoicstudio.com/uploaded

If you see any of these broken links, please post them here and I will try to replace them.

Thanks!

Yeah, probably
The downsides of being popular... but I think it's passed. We'll look at tightening things up even more (can never be too secure), though!

Ah, just unfortunate... But as long these hackers don't interrupt with the game itself...

Guess, the hacks are just proof of the big alertness that the Banner Saga gets by now...

Aye the first hacker left a backdoor that we missed. I believe we've cleaned it up entirely.

Clean 'em all

John, I noticed that all the default avatars do not appear properly, but just as a hyperlinked text ("<username>'s Avatar") leading to the user's page. Perhaps that's one of the broken links you mentioned above, or just another small issue?

PS -- I noticed the change in the front-page of the stoicstudio.com website, now focusing more on the Saga (and less on Factions, since the main dish is coming). But, is it just me, or does the introduction text seem a little "drafty" yet? I mean, it does convey all the important information about the game (well, only the music is not mentioned) but it seems like it's not exactly in place. I'd structure the text around three pillars: (1) Theme/Story, (2) Game-design/genre, (3) Art/Aesthetics. Sorry for sounding obtrusive in any way; I just care about the game :)

My buddy, who is now avidly playing Factions with me, would like to register on the forums, but it seems that the registration link leads to a broken page. When you get the opportunity, fixing that up would be massively appreciated.

My sympathies on the hack, and thanks for getting things back up and running so quickly.

Well in the mean time I've been enjoying pretend hacking with hackertyper.com (http://hackertyper.com/). Just mash on the key board like you're from a 90s cyber flick. It brings the jollies.

I'm not sure if this is known or not, the majority of the website is not loading for me while using internet explorer or safari (and has not ever since the site was hacked). My mobile device can load the website, but my PC and iPad cannot. I would wager the near abrupt halt to traffic on the forums and chat is due to the fact that people cant get in to the site using the links from google or whatever other search engine is providing the link. It seems the only link that is functioning for me on my PC is http://stoicstudio.com/forum/forum.php

I did have some issues with the links, in the first days after the hacks, but (being relatively adept computer-wise) I barely noticed it.

Now that you mention it, the number of google hits on "banner saga", "stoic studio" etc is a bit low, but I can't remember if it was so before the attacks too. The links that come up are valid though.

Dunno, perhaps google purges links to hacked-sites from their algorithms, in order to reduce exposure of unsuspecting users on (so-called) potentially infected and politically incorrect websites?

Would you guys mind providing me with any broken URLs you find, and/or google search results that contain them?

Thanks!

John - Prior to today none of the links to the site were working for me. This includes www.stoicstudio.com as coming up with an error 404. Just on a whim, I decided to clean out all the temporary internet files (including "favorite's cookies"). Right after doing this, I stopped encountering the 404 error and the website loaded right up.

Now I'm in no way super techy, so maybe I was supposed to know I was supposed to do that :). But, I've heard other people were having issues with the site as well. Perhaps they just need to delete any cookies that may have been developed with the old version of the site? FYI - I've been using internet explorer 10 while this happened.

Sorry for the confusion. Also, the new images in the Image Gallery are such a tease! Everything looks soooooooooo great. I love the "Traveling near Grofheim image where the caravan is walking away from the cliff face. Thanks!

After some further delving, I had a previous link saved in my favorites which appears to still be broken.

Edit: added a space between the forward slashes to prevent truncating of the link

Not sure if you guys are already aware, but the Great Hall images in the image gallery appear to be broken. Not sure if this is related to the hack or not.

Some people are not worth the air they breathe.

I hadn't visited the forum in a while, and then I discovered it wasn't there anymore. Good to see things are getting back to normal!

November 13, 2016, saw another hack-attack on the forums. Here's the screenshot of the "defaced" forum, for the living memory of this small community :)

Isn't collective memory what keeps an "organism" alive and going? Once we forget, we will soon be forgotten. And memories apply to good and bad alike.
