This will be my first post on the board, albeit that I have been around for much longer already, looking at the amazing contributions here... I'm excited about the fan art that is submitted here (both written and painted) and am glad to see people sharing an interest in the lore of Banner Saga. It keeps me distracted and helps bridging the gap between now and whenever we get to see some more 'official' input on the rich background history of the game.

But to cut to the chase: I would be honored to hear your feedback on my first attempt at a Banner Saga inspired drawing. It's not an art style that I would've considered immediately otherwise, but I was so impressed by the world created by Stoic (and inspired by Eyvind Earle) that I had to give it a try. There's still a long way to go for me (especially as far as painting the background is concerned) and look forward to your thoughts.

Some context on the drawing itself: I wanted to explore an alternative setting in the world of Banner Saga while our two main caravans are just about to get really entangled in the unfolding events. So I picked a location on the map in close proximity - Nautmot. This also gave me the opportunity to draw a yox, animals that don't get as much credit in the game as they should ^^ After all our heroes would've been lost without them very quickly. Unfortunately I couldn't find many reference drawings (maybe there's concept art somehwhere?) so I created the yox inspired by the small pixel art I could find in the game files themselves. I hope you enjoy my yox-herding varl...

Hello, Isbjoern.

1. Very nice! I like how you conserve the cartoonish nature of the characters (sprites), while "rendering" the landscape. The banner-balloon is nice too :)
2. Check this "Contest" out -- http://stoicstudio.com/create, since you are artistically inclined. You might find it interesting!
3. Being Greek, I can understand you signature very well ;) I hope more sea-travel comes into the game-world in the future.

Thanks for the kind words and feedback! And Aleonymous I'm delighted to have met someone who understands my signature :)

As far as the contest (http://stoicstudio.com/create) is concerned I was initially very excited, but had to learn through the official contest rules that only residents of the US can partake/win here. Nevertheless I'm looking forward to what the community contributes & creates here!

Oh... really? I didn't bother to read the rules, but this US-only is a bummer indeed. Well, I am sure anyone can contribute for "the love of the game", and just forfeit win (e.g. receive that mini-banner or whatever it is). Or, one can submit his art through a trusted US-citizen/friend ;)

So, will you be doing anymore art on TBS? :D

PS -- You could share your work on TBS's facebook (https://www.facebook.com/BannerSaga), too.

Hehe, I will have to check with my colleagues in the States... :)

And yes, definitely. I'm currently on a bit of a TBS / Eyvind Earle fan-trip... Have been working on the next picture most of today, but getting a proper understanding E.E.s art style is proving to be a bit of a challenge (in a positive way). I need to create whole new sets of brushes in Photoshop and change my usual approach on shading, etc. It's really interesting.

Long story short: I hope to have the next picture finished tomorrow :)

So here comes part II. I wanted to explore the setting around Nautmot some more, so I have sent my two characters on the way back to their village. The scenery they return to is far from pleasant...

I've put the two characters (and their loyal yox) into a caravan/traval situation as so frequently seen in TBS. This time around I've tried to better capture the art style of Eyvind Earle and the Stoic team. There's still some learning to be done, but overall I'm happy with the results. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

I would love to hear what you think :)

I daresay that it feels just like the game! :) Very faithful capturing of the "theme", in my untrained eye. Especially that out-of-focus foreground...

I see that the village's banner is still intact. Hurry!

PS -- I hope Arnie checks this soon. Have posted them at their facebook? That surely gets more attention, at least from VersusEvil, the publishers.

Thanks you so much for the feedback. Glad to hear you like it :) And it will be a very tight race for the banner... I'm afraid there might be nothing they can do.

I haven't posted this on facebook, thought the forums would be the best place for this since people who find their way into "The Meadhall" certainly are interested in the game and it's lore. I have uploaded the drawings to my deviantART (http://isbjoernson.deviantart.com/) page though. Feel free to check it out if you like.

I have already started working on part III, somehow I'm all inspired by TBS right now.

Looking forward to Part III!

Thanks for sharing your dA. Found some more nice stuff over there, relevant to TBS, like this:

Thanks Aleonymous, this was actually created a long time ago :)

But without further ado I present to you part III of my little story here. This time around I've tried to move the art even closer to the actual look of the game and added the black borders at the top and bottom of the 'screen'. Most importantly though I have our little ragtag group of survivors face a tough decision, something that we all know just too well from within the game :)

Two things:

1.) I would love it for the community here to call out what choice (1 to 5) you want the protagonists of this little story to take. Based on your votes I'll further develop the story. Aleonymous, looking at the participation in this thread so far, it might actually only be you seeing this. So I count on you :)

2.) The 'decision window' (for the lack of a better word) is taken right out of the game assets and was merely cleaned up and cut in shape through Photoshop. If this is in any shape our form against the wishes of Stoic I do sincerely apologize and will take the drawing offline immediately.

I vote 3.

Nice work by the way!

Haha! Yeah, that 'decision window' looked too much like the game's own :) I really like how Stoic are not actively trying to "hide" all the game-art. Can't wait for that art-book

I vote 4 (because I wanna see you draw some Dredge and some fighting scenes! :D)

You all forget that choices in Saga are usually not what they say they are. So I choose 2 :D

So true... So true...

Thanks @all for your replies so far! I'll give it until this evening (once I'm off work) and start doing some sketches for the most popular choice. I have a separate vote running on deviantART but it isn't really getting much traction there. We'll see :) Have some great ideas for each of the 5 options, so feel free to continue voting.

stupid Bjarne needs to be reminded not to stick his nose where it does not belong. one would think he'd know better now since last time he literally lost it ( check portrait ); a fact he hopelessly tries to hide 24/7 with that hideous stinking helmet of his.

we didn't care about that rotting village for a start. proven by the fact we set camp a few hundred meters from it. so i say we hit Bjarne a couple times, shouldn't lose the old habit. then feed Olga, the female varl we married and wait for the dredge to go somewhere else so we can pillage those huts without any worries about the owners.

choose #1 FTW

Hehe, point well made. I have a little something prepared in response for this and will upload it as soon as I'm back home later on today. As far as the vote is concerned we are currently at:

Choice 1: 1 Vote
Choice 2: 1 Vote
Choice 3: 1 Vote
Choice 4: 2 Votes
Choice 5: 0 Votes

I'll give it another 5 hours. But it appears we have a yox-herder (at least a varl) and a freaked-out human blindly attacking a dredge infested village. Wonder how that will go down...

Thanks again for taking part in this, great to see your comments :)

So here's my promised update and part IV of this little 'plot'. Thanks again, the following development (and all its consequences) have been your choice... Keep that in mind :)

UPDATE: It's all about banners!

With 2 votes in total the choice Discard all fear and attack in full roar won the vote.

I hope you enjoy the development of the story and I'll make sure to include some action in the next drawing ;) Unfortunately I will be far removed from my graphics tablet for the next week, so there will be a slight delay in the unfolding of this story. I would like to leave with another chance for your input though and am excited to see the result upon my return :)

The central piece in this picture is the Stoic original, taken out of the game. Aside from the 'decision windows' all art and text is mine.

Option #5 allows you to provide whatever answer you would like to see. The more creative and convincing the better :)

Hey Isbjoern! I just realized that I hadn't seen this last (3-month old) post of yours :( It's probably because you edited it instead of making a new one... Post edits don't show up in the "New Posts" or "What's New" sections of the forum, and I probably forgot you telling us to check back soon. Sorry about that...

Nevertheless, I hope that you still keep an interest in TBS, cuz I am really curious to see what happens next! :o My choice is, of course, #1: Charge!

Oh, browsing the forums I stumbled across this very old thread of mine and do want to apologize for vacating it without any sort of statement.

I'm delighted to see there was interest in continuing this little story-thread but family matters had pretty much taken me offline at that time. I'd love to do something similar for TBS 2, but first I have to -of course- have a couple of playthroughs :)
