I think we have a bot spamming the forums. User uneclaiceag has been posting nonsense and what I think are phishing links. This merits immediate attention.

Yeah, looks like we had a few spammers sneak in during the early morning AM. They have been squashed, though! Thanks for the reported posts!

Hi Sean, not to be paranoid and this seems borderline, but I think you should give Brucepaul a check at least

An interesting trend I've noticed: Almost all the spambots on this forum have an ICQ number linked to their profile.

Yeah, I swear they purposefully wait for it either to be the middle of the night or they somehow know when I'm out and have something going on to do their spammage. Anywho, took care of him and the other one.

Damn spambots, they have become part of my morning ritual. Turn on computer, make coffee, ban spambots. Maybe I need to plug this into Stop Forum Spam to help detect these guys earlier. Already have a few safeguards in but a few seem to be find their ways around it lately.

Yeah, I'm a little surprised at the huge amount of spambots plaguing the forums lately. I wonder how frequently somebody actually clicks on their links.

EDIT#2: AND the off-topic forum!

While there isn't a lot of posters, there is a lot of traffic. It's pretty much the 1% rule (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1%25_rule_(Internet_culture)) (although it is really more as a guideline since I know some communities that don't those numbers in the same way). For the most part, the largest segment of your community (usually around 90%) are just lurkers, 9% engage/post on a semi-regular basis, and about 1% is there all the time ;)

The worst (or funny) part is, these are maybe 1% of the people who try (talking about the spammers, that is, not the high engaged users). We do have a few safeguards in to identify spambots and most of them are caught. The ones who seem to get through are the handmade ones (instead of the accounts made through a script/macro).

Hopefully, they are not too much of an annoyance, we try to get rid of them as quickly as they pop up. Sorta like wack-a-mole ;)

zdwcflpuqi, pretty much everywhere.

I know I've mentioned this before, but just about every spambot I've seen on these forums has an ICQ number linked to their profile. It's the only common thread I've noticed (aside from posting gibberish and lots of links, of course.)

And yeah, they keeping coming and coming. I've been more pro-active lately -- basically looking at new accounts that raise my own red-flag (and currently I'm about 99% correct on them) and banning the accounts out-right.

Looking more into it, it's not so much that they are hoping you read their posts. Rather, they are looking to increase their SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Basically, this site gets a fair amount of traffic so it gets crawled by Google and other Search Engines often. When they (search engines) are picking up links from posts, it increases the ranking for that URL. For example, if I link to this conversation on my site and then Kotaku does, the search engine ranking for it will boost much more (due to Kotaku).

So, basically, they are trying to increase their scores. Luckily, we've been shutting them down faster so they should be getting nothing out of it... except for increasing my annoyance level ;)

I just thought of something hilariously ironic what if a spambot put spam in this thread and nobody noticed for like four days?
