OK, something for all you bored people on a Monday night, me included.

Post films stills of films that you like, the first one to get it right puts the next one up... It can be something you've found on the internet or a screenshot from a film you own.

**No offensive or inappropriate stills allowed**

Okay, lets start with an easy one... Here's my offering:

I feel like I should know this, and yet I have no idea.

As a hint, this is a sort of "flashback" in the movie so it doesn't feature characters as they are in the main portion of the film. The cinematography is also different.

I think I made it too tricksy. :X

sharksummoner, no it's not brazil. That's a pretty good guess, as the scene is kind of Gilliam-esque, but he'd never go as far as this particular director does with the sequence from which this still was taken. I never said it was classic (in my opinion it is, but your mileage may vary with this one...) I said it's a cult movie (emphasis on cult) and a personal favorite of mine. To be honest it was kind of hard to find a still that fit the guidelines considering much of the film is both inappropriate and offensive (depending on your personal feelings on art and religion). I will say, as a hint, that the director turns shit into gold within this film, quite literally.. What was your other guess?

Btw this is an art film and definitely the best known work by this director.

Holy Mountain? Might be confusing this with Santa Sangre, but I'm pretty sure it's from a Jodorowsky film.

Edit: Nevermind, just read the hint. Definitely Holy Mountain, haha.

Indeed, it is. Your go, Kord.

Also, if you haven't seen Holy Mountain you are doing yourself a disservice. Make sure you get the one by Jordorowsky and not the one by the Nazi sympathizer Leni Riefenstahl. The latter film is essentially just a silhouette of a lady dancing behind a screen. Rent it and you will be sorely disappointed. The legit one is one of the most inventive films I've ever seen. Jordorowsky's particular brand of film-making combines the grotesque, the mystical, and the hilarious in almost every image.

Tidbit: Jordorowsky was originally lined up to direct Dune instead of David Lynch. He was negotiating with Dali to play the role of the emperor. www.duneinfo.com/unseen/jodorowsky/

you are right Kord, you guessed it.

if any of you guys liked holy mountain, "el topo" is worth a watch. another surreal script in a spaghetti western setting. his metaphors are alright, but i always find the visual imagery the most powerful item in his films, which i like, but i don't consider genius at all.

personally i don't like him that much. he's quite the character though, well versed in many subjects. heard him lots of times in spanish radio and in tv shows too. but i always have the feeling that he is a trickster or "con artist" (i had to look this word in the dictionary i hope it means what i think it means, in spanish i'd say embaucador). he's reeaally charming but i don't swallow everything he says.

i have some unfinished business though, reading his "la casta de los metabarones" comic series. i really do want to read them.

Nope, not johnny mnemonic. I've never actually seen that movie, is it good? Been looking for some good sci-fi to watch.

man i didn´t like that film and i probably was 15 when i watched it :p don't know if it deserves a re-watch but i'd stay far away from it just in case. in my opinion if you want keanu reeves in a decent sci-fi film go watch "a scanner darkly", which also has a couple of very funny scenes.

EDIT: wooo classic japanese sengoku jidai film, or something like that. chances are it has toshiro mifune in it, or tatsuya nakadai, no ?

Kord, without giving too much away about A Beautiful Mind, he gets a device with a changing code injected under his skin for access to a top-secret military location, that scene always stood out to me for some reason, especially considering the direction the movie goes in later.

For the latest screen I'm fairly certain it's Harakiri. Although like balnoisi said from that angle it could be Mifune OR Nakadai.

Kord
01-16-2013, 09:19 PM
Ahh. didn't realize you'd posted two from the same movie haha. Totally missed that somehow. Obviously I need to go watch that movie again.

And yup, it's Harakiri. Possibly my favorite film, it makes me happy y'all got it so quick. :D

Did you see the 2011 Takashi Miike remake? I thought it was very well done, he clearly respects the source material a lot, it pretty much follows the original exactly scene by scene just with more modern cinematography, acting etc. Definitely worth a watch.

I'll post a new screen up in a little bit.

Yer, and I did like it, but perhaps I'm a bit biased towards the original, heh. I think Miike's version just lacked the... hmm, intensity of the original I guess. Same with the actors, they did a good job, but I could feel this subtle ferociousness from the original characters, and no one tops Nakadai haha. Also the end scene I felt wasn't nearly as dramatic since they lumped the three duels all in one, and just kind of sped it up overall which I think actually takes away from it. The original's end still gives me chills. And then the soundtrack... no comparison man, no comparison. Haha, this makes it seem like I didn't like it, but I definitely did, just didn't stand up to the original in my opinion.

bal, I agree that Jodorowsky could definitely be described as "con-artist," but I think that's also part of the appeal. I don't think he's genius but he has a distinct and realized vision, and I respect that in art above all else. There's a unity in his disjointedness. Another funny tidbit (and it might be in that interview I linked, as well): he often brags that he had sexual relationship/s with the entire cast of The Holy Mountain during production. I think Holy Mountain is much better than El Topo, but it has its merits as well.

This is not my favorite by this particular dude, nor is it his best known, but it's a good one with some really good photo direction. I was going to do a Coen next, but mrpres got there first. Vague hint incoming: The movie I almost chose (also by this director) has imagery that's just too iconic and obvious, and it would be guessed immediately.

yeah, no question about that, at least he dared making different kind of films and so many years after they still got some power so well done to him. and as far as i know him, that's what i like, his creativity. i'd love if he had made a dozen more films. probably not masterpieces to me, but still very interesting.

and about him "doing" the whole cast of the film, if he did congratulations, if i remember well there were a lot of beautiful girls. but this is one of the things i find suspicious about him, all this yoga/tantra/ayurveda/tarot/etc .. mixing all kinds of oriental writings together, smells fishy to me. well i confess anything even remotely related to new age gives me the creeps :p

about the film screenshot; i got the feeling i should know it. but i don't. it's an offtopic but i can say that the setting and the lighting and the musical instrument reminded me of a video of bart davenport singing my favourite song of his : "clara". http://youtu.be/cfdeNFjzSyU

what can i say, i thought it was enough and ok to post an image or hint per day, but you guys jumped at this one like hungry sharks.

the first screenshot can't be so obvious, it's gotta be ... weeell .. mysterious. and interesting. plus i think its one of the best little moments in the film. the next screenshot would have been more iconic/representative/informative of course (screamin' jay hawkins and the other guy at the motel desk).

i noticed one of the players in this thread had a steam avatar with another jim jarmusch film character, that's how i thought of this one. i've watched most of his films and even if they are a little bit boring, there's a lot of fantastic stuff in them too. you just have to be in the appropriate mood, the same slow pace. or at least don't mind 8 minutes of landscape and silence between every great dialogue exchange.

obscure enough yeah, but not that much. we had "harakiri" which i don't think many people have seen even if its kind of a classic. but i was right somehow that it was gonna be solved soon .. even if somebody cheats and can't remain shut for a while, and breaks the game and prevents the fun of other player who was going to get it. if this was in person you wouldn't be playing anymore cheater, you should be ashamed :D get yerself a donkey hat and wear it for the whole weekend. or something like that hahah !
