View Full Version : help filling out a reference wiki

So, I figured it might be nice to have a repository of basic information folks can go to when they have questions about the game's rules. If the basics are in before public launch, we can direct newcomers there or use it as a reference in answering questions. Anyway, if anyone is so inclined, these are several battle-related things I don't anticipate soon filling out myself:

battle rules (http://bannersaga.wikidot.com/battle)
abilities (http://bannersaga.wikidot.com/ability:_list)

Flavor text (http://stoicstudio.com/forum/showthread.php?879-Wiki-flavor-text) for unit pages would also be cool, I reckon. Don't worry about formatting any of this; I can fix it up ex post.

By the way, I just changed the page-width settings for the site (so it looks okay at both 1920 or 525, which I sometimes use); please let me know if you see a problem with it.

There's also a Wikia wiki Dysp has been working on; and some discussion on the forum of making an official wiki eventually. I figure stuff can by copy-pasted elsewhere later if needed, but it's best to actually fill in some content at this point.

How do I join the wiki? It won't let me make changes unless I am a member, but I already have an account.

@flickerdart: Oh, forgot to mention that you need to make an account with the wiki's host, wikidot.com . If you've already got that and can't edit, ... I think it should prompt you to join somehow.

Sorry, didn't think of that.

EDIT: Two forum-goers joined earlier, so I had assumed it was straightforward, but I can't see how it's done... If you can't figure it out, let me know. And if you can, maybe leave instructions here?

EDIT #2: There should be a "Join" button on the front page of the wiki now.

Dunno how to add images to the wiki but here are some.

Hi Flickerdart,
I've put your move options picture on the Battle page, in a box with a caption. To upload others, go to the bottom of any page and click "Files". And to include them, you can follow the wikidot guidelines (http://www.wikidot.com/doc:wiki-syntax#toc28), or use the method I did...

[[include image-box | file=move_options.png | title="The action menu" | caption=//The action menu//]]
[]

Image-box is itself a page on the wiki (http://bannersaga.wikidot.com/image-box) that I just created.

EDIT: By the way, how did you adjust the lighting to focus on the expert-mode timer in the last of your pics?

I like how you left empty abilities as though they put the unit to sleep.. zzz

Flickerdart: Those images look great.

franknarf: I think he used magic! Magic isn't allowed (yet?) in The Banner Saga!

Btw, I thought I'd attack the empty ability descriptions.

franknarf

Yeah, I thought it looked suspiciously like magic, too...

Cool cool. No more sleeper viking cells, I see. Fill in whatever else you like, of course. The Battle page still has some gaps; there's a mostly-empty page for Strand (which could use, e.g., some pictures); and there's not yet a page explaining matchmaking and rankings.

It's just Photoshop - a layer of black at something like 40% opacity and a 50px feather oval hole in it.

I have to say, the wiki is shaping up steadily and nicely :). Keep up the good work.

Hi again, just one more update:

I think it's sufficient that it be a reference wiki, but have set aside a section for pages on tactics and strategy (http://bannersaga.wikidot.com/guide:_list) with some very basic content, in case anyone is interested in letting the world know their tactical secrets via wiki instead of a full-on guide. In a sense, definitions for community lingo like "turn advantage" belong on a reference wiki, I suppose... Anyway, it's segmented from the main content.

As far as the reference content goes, I think we've already done a great job :D, but have put a few remaining items on a todo list: http://bannersaga.wikidot.com/todo

EDIT@Flickerdart: Yeah, I tried highlighting part of a screenshot in paint.net (to direct folks to the in-game tutorials button), but it didn't turn out so great, I think: http://bannersaga.wikidot.com/guide:_start

You gotta play around with the opacity of the layer, the feather on the hole, and some strategic cropping.

I tried again, but ended up going for something far cruder: carving an arrow out of the overlay ;) . It's probably functional enough, so I'll leave it be.

Hello guys. Just letting you know I signed up for help expanding in the wikidot site.

I prefer this wiki to other one (wikia) because of its cleaner look and, mainly, the lack of ads.

Hey guys,

Would it be alright with you if we merged the wikidot with the Official Banner Saga Wiki (http://bannersaga.gamepedia.com/Main_Page)? John says it's Stoic's intent to make the official wiki the "one stop shop" for all wiki-based info related to the Banner Saga. You have all done some awesome work on the wikidot, which would be a very valuable addition to the official wiki. If we did merge the two, the wikidot would be left intact.

And please feel free to make additional contributions/edits the official wiki, it would be very helpful to have you guys on board!

Hello Guğmundr!

It's great that TBS gets its official wiki in such a big gaming-portal; I'm sure it'll help promoting the game to a larger market. I'm personally not a big fan of advertisement-filled sites (there's bad-banners and good-banners ;)), and especially wikis, that are supposed to be community-driven. I understand the market-opening and the running costs issues, it's just my mentality... I don't even mind contributing/donating money for the running costs of a "banner-free" banner-saga (ah, that oxymoron again! :D) wiki. Actually, is there a way to kinda reduce them ads?

Now, concerning the wikidot material, lets wait and hear from Franknarf, who's the master admin there. On my side, I'm sure there's no problem with merging the existing wikidot-material into the official wiki, and I can surely help with contributions/edits/maintenance. It'll be a trouble duplicating efforts between different wiki-platforms, but I guess its for the good-of-the-game, right? I take it that it's you "in charge" for the gamepedia wiki, so you're the contact person there.

Cheers,

Alex

Curse probably has a contact person that Stoic is in touch with. I think Gud is just asking cos John probably contacted Gud about it.

Hey Aleonymous,

Thanks for the response! I'll ask John about the possibility of reducing the number of ads.

I wouldn't say I'm "in charge", per se, but I was in charge of migrating and editing the content from the wikia (which, by the way, wasn't too much trouble).

Like you said, I'll wait to hear from Franknarf before starting to tackle the content transfer.

OK, I am just trying to find out how things work in that wiki; you know, things like administering, general organization, proofing/editing/monitoring, site-structuring, styling, presentation, information-depth/volume, perspectives etc...

The "unofficial" wikidot wiki was pretty much laid-out (apart from some "peripheral" pages) and, also, there were only about 3-4 active contributors. This means that things were pretty simple, and most matters of "objective" nature were promptly resolved under the watchful guidance of Franknarf. I'm sure it works in a similar way with wikia/gamepedia, i.e., someone has to be somehow "in charge". What I'm interested to understand is if that person is a TBS-gamer, a forum-regular, a Stoic-man or somebody totally unrelated to the community?

Okay, I see what you're saying.

Basically, the Curse team and I will divide that responsibility. They're better at complex wiki markup and things like that, but I don't believe any of them actually play the Banner Saga. They're not very intrusive when it comes to content, unless it's obviously bad or wrong.

So if you have any content questions, you can direct them to me. I'll be making sure all the content and layouts fit the standards of the wiki and "resolving objective matters". But I might ask someone else to join me at some point; possibly Franknarf, since he seemed to handle the job quite well on the wikidot.

Cool. So, let's wait for Franknarf's OK while we're honing our axes :). I have to admit that he is very thorough and prompt in addressing the issues raised, and, obviously he's competent in "complex wiki markup" as you put it.

Ah, hello there. I just noticed this thread after Aleo linked me to the announcement thread for the curse wiki. Yeah, merging the sites is totally fine with me. I don't think the authors of the content would object or would be entitled to (that's how wikis work, right? this is the only non-private wiki I've set up before...). I would be happy to help if you've got questions or want me to change or hide the wikidot site. I'm sure I'll be helping to edit the site sooner or later, but expect to be relatively busy for a while.

I'm not sure what should happen to the wikidot site...? Maybe we can eventually make it members-only (effectively hiding it from search engine traffic) or change the name ("Fan wiki for The Banner Saga: Factions"?) and put a link to the gamepedia wiki front and center?

Anyway, here are the pros and cons of keeping it open, from my perspective:

(-) It's duplicating information. The wikidot site is set up as a reference, but not as a tutorial or guide. (Instead, the wiki links to guides.) I think that's pretty much how most wikis work, and likely how the gamepedia one will work as well.
(-) Stoic should choose how their game is represented.
(+/-) As Aleo said, the site is pretty much complete and it's structure is figured out. The fact that it's pretty complete makes it ready for migration to gamepedia, but it might be nice to have the information laid out differently. E.g., on wikidot, there is no "Stats" page. Instead, the stats are covered on a "Units" page, along with some discussion of abilities. This structure may be harder to keep straight with a bunch of editors, as the gamepedia site is sure to have, so I'm not saying that it should be adopted. But it is a different way of structuring the information which I find more helpful (and I think other mid-level players also find it easier to browse).
(+) In wikidot, I can automagically take a category of pages and put them together in a list (http://bannersaga.wikidot.com/unit:_list), or extract a part of each page in a category (in this case, the infobox) and put them all in a grid (http://bannersaga.wikidot.com/wide:unit-grid).
(+) Because the site is so stripped down (doesn't have ads or clutter), it's possible to announce news and such along the top bar. Right now, it's set up to take the first line from one of these pages (http://bannersaga.wikidot.com/tip:add-tips) at random.
(+) Um, the layout of the wikidot site is way better. :) I know almost nothing about CSS and stoicstudio.com looks great, so I'm sure the gamepedia will soon look great too (e.g., by making sure it's easy to use on mobile and at different browser widths).

The list, grid and random page things are (I think) only possible on wikidot, thanks to its special "listpages" feature. There may be a way to do that (and also page translation, which netnazgul started for some pages) on gamepedia, but I'm not really passionate about solving those problems.

To be honest, I wasn't really passionate about expanding the wikidot wiki to document spoilers like random Saga events, either (as, e.g., you'll see on the FTL wiki), so it probably was never really going to morph into a one-stop shop for the series.

Sorry for the slow reply. I've mostly just been following the vigrid tourney lately and happened to be out of town the last couple days. :)

TLDR: Go ahead and move stuff over...I'm confused as to what an official one-stop shop should mean for the future of the unofficial wiki.

Thanks for the reply, Franknarf! Thank you also for the input about the official wiki, I'll try to incorporate some of your suggestions.

I'll get to work merging the wikis sometime soon. Thanks again for allowing us to use your content!

I'm curious, what exactly about the layout do you think looks bad? Be honest! :)

Oh, I just don't like the fact that the webpage expands to fill the full width of my screen. Any 10-12pt text over 1000px wide (http://bannersaga.gamepedia.com/The_Banner_Saga) is harder to read (for me) than sites with a layout like stoicstudio.com 's. That's really a quick fix, I guess...something to do with max-width and min-width or something. Based on the Curse sites on the bottom, like GW2Guru, maybe they'll change that. I guess it's not a big deal; even wikipedia expands to fill the space in that way. :)

Also, links in the left sidebar turn dark blue after they've been clicked, and this is unreadable against the black background.

So, I might have overstated the case with "way better". Probably the ads distracted me. :)

By the way, I PM'ed you regarding something that might help with the migration. Let me know if it would be useful.
