What happens when we don't need renown anymore?

Renown is a great currency system, but a lot of longtime players will reach a point where they are just stockpiling them because they've already unlocked all/enough units to suit their needs. I know there are going to be more units unlocked, and more things buyable with renown, but eventually people will have bought all of them and will not have any use for renown anymore.

Should there be a cashsink that you can continually pay renown into for a temporary unlock? What sort of features should be temporary unlocked?

Should there be a secondary currency/XP system that you gain or level so you can keep achieving something after you have no use for renown anymore?

I've also reached this point where I have each rank of units and multiple copies of each rank. I know most of the fun should come from playing games, but a lot of people like a continually progression system or feeling of earning something worthwhile. Just my thoughts

rodereve, it has been so long since i asked the question about the uses of renown, but Arnie did give me a reply somewhere back in the thousands of chat logs or in one of the threads. raven has a good memory - maybe he'll help me remember: something about building a city or cities???

Stoic will be putting in renown sinks in the game once they're back working on Factions. It isn't too hard to think of regular sinks which would eat up the renown, but we'll have to wait and see what they come up with. Anyone is free to throw out a good idea or some scheme which would be nice to use renown on of course

And yes, City Building will be one of the major things that will end up eating a LOT of renown once Stoic have fleshed it out.

The dead horse of ideas (feel free to flog away!)

    - TF2 model: make hats. Lots of hats, preferably of the Viking variety.

    - Banner Saga casino! Bet on the outcomes of matches. Think your 4 Siege Archer, 2 thrasher build is unbeatable? Then put your renown where your mouth is and bet on it!

    - Changeable skins: tired of the beautiful animation and bespoke Viking feel? Then why not buy re-skins! What's worse than fighting a team of back biters? A team of back biters dressed as storm troopers riding bare back on ton tons! Let your opponent really feel the force!

    - Pillage mode intimidation: Down to your last man? surrounded by those pesky Bow masters? Then drop your shield and axe and shoot them your most intimidating look because you've got the most renown in the strand and you want every body to know it. The enemy will run not in fear of what you have done, but in fear of what you could do! For your renown speaks for its self and surely even out gunned and out manned you will likely find a way to wriggle out of the clawy grip of defeat to rise victorious against such insurmountable odds.

    An auto win button essentially.

Here are a few ideas that came to my head

    -Donkey mail:

"Your mother looks like a mad squirrel and your father reeks of 8-week old berrysprouts!"

Be able to send messages to your friends in game (for a small fee of 15 renown each, should cover lodging and voyage expenses for the mailman on donkey). The messages would be displayed on a side banner, just like the ones already in game. Inspired by something AP said to me

    Donating:

"Your comrade AnotherPersona has lost his entire goat herd to a mudslide! He is currently digging his wife out as we speak. Donate 5 renown to his aid? Yes/No."

-you can donate max 50 renown to a friend, to prevent exploits
-this can help get personal friends into the game, bypassing the initial hump

-Band of Vikings: Akin to the modern jukebox, you donate 15 renown and they play a short song for you (possibly a quick snippet from the banner saga soundtrack)

-Idol Statue: A statue of Odin in the middle of town, you can donate 2 renown for good luck! (like the modern wishing well)

-Town noticeboard: It'd just be a blank woodenboard and have 20 empty paper notes nailed to it, and you can pay 30 renown to have your own message on the board for 2 days. Maybe its a notice looking for new clan members, ppl to play with during offhours, or just a note saying "Roder sends his regards!"

-Clans:If they ever include clans, it should have a weekly maintenance fee, so that the leader/members have to donate to meet the quota to keep the clan open (e.g. 200 renown total).
    Clan features unlocked by renown:
-clan tags beside names (30 renown)
    -personalized clan banner (50 renown)
    -clan chat (10 renown)
    -clan noticeboard (15 renown)
-clan tournament (100 renown to unlock for members, free to enter)
    -clan vs clan raids! (?)

Maybe with the city building and Factions (clan/guild) features in they could put in some game modes, like war/mission mode, where you manage supplies and fighting force, go on expeditions, set out on missions which reward you/your clan with territory or prestige? Some kind of thing that continually sucks up renown but which is fun to do would be awesome yes? Maybe they could make certain classes usable only through this way, for a set period of time, and then you need to set out again to keep them.

If ever spectator mode will be implemented, It would be great if we can wager some renown, or give a certainn amount of renoun to the winner... This would help out newer players...

Another (simple to do) renown sink could be adding prefixes & suffixes (custom or from-a-list) to your character names, e.g. simple "Manfred" can be renamed to "Manfred the Unlucky" or "Black Manfred" or "Fat Manfred the Immense", for 10 renown or something. Nicknames and such could be unlocked like achievements too. E.g. if a character misses ten 90% shots in his career he unlocks the "the Unlucky" suffix.

I would pay renown for multiple load outs...as in here is my lvl 6 team, and here is my lvl 12 team.

    Here's a renown sink idea.

Buy armor for units with renown.

    Enhance armor using renown.

    Forge new armor with renown.

Customize the color of sections of armor with renown.

Buy special costumes with renown. (Want your Varl to look like an Iron Giant from Final Fantasy? or your Backbiter to look like Cloud from FF 7? Renown can fix this issue.)

I agree that aesthetic improvements/changes (i.e. "vanity") to the characters is perhaps the best renown sink: Those that play a lot and have earned a lot of Renown, should have the most renowned looks! I'm sure this demands for some work in the art department, but I hope that Stoic has designed their sprites & animations in such a way that changing the colors or any uniformly-colored area is relatively simple...

i agree about aesthetic changes, some small colour variation palette. it'd be nice if besides spending renown on it you had to win a number of battles to actually achieve that renowned status and unlock it. opposed to now when a day 1 player can have all the variations available.

"Vindictus" is a great game to reference when it comes to characters armor and color customization, as its the only game i know of that lets you dye several sections of your armor in any color you want using their RGB values, not just default colors.

Although obviously this game is not graphically comparable, it would still be nice to make our own colored units, so as to in the future show our allegiance to a clan or guild via color recognition.

I'd like to see that feature too, but I believe that Stoic (and especially Arnie ) would not like to see their so delicately paletted characters "vandalized" in the form of blue-haired aliens with pink vests and bright-green trousers! That's why there's bound to be some sort of color palette restrictions...

Really hoping for something like this. Atm I don't have much time to play, if I come back later and realize everyone else has massive advantage due to having more renown, I propably won't go for the grind and drop the game. Therefore aesthetics are the best way to go, though I hope they'll release buyable skins so I have an incentive to donate more

    A Autowinmode for Renown? Lol
Well even the largest Looser should be able to get the feel of a victory. Too bad for was the better and has played Neat. ^ ^ At least you can Renown already buy, so that would be a pay to win principle.

But the first two ideas with the Viking hats and the casino are quite nice.

I would also ensure that you can build your own city with Renown. With Arena, tavern etc in which you can then invite players to a tournament. Or you can run the slave trade. A Viking sell you no longer need. Very honorably but is not. ^ ^
